The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is a crucial examination in India for admission to undergraduate medical courses. It was established in 2013 by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Dental Council of India (DCI) to standardize the admission process for medical colleges across the country. NEET replaced multiple entrance exams previously conducted by individual states and institutions, such as the All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and various state-level medical entrance tests.
NEET is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), which was formed in 2017 to handle the examination process. The test assesses candidates on subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, and is used for admissions to medical and dental undergraduate programs, including MBBS, BDS, and other allied health courses.
As of recent data, there are approximately 90,000 MBBS seats and 26,000 BDS seats available in government and private medical colleges across India. The number of seats can vary slightly each year due to changes in the number of medical colleges and new admissions. NEET is a highly competitive exam, with millions of students participating annually for these limited seats.
